“Let the muse find you working.”
“Don’t wait for inspiration. Start writing, and it will come.”
That’s the common advice we hear about writing, and it’s missing something crucial.
What we need isn’t inspiration. But neither do we need stubbornness or a work ethic of steel.
What we need is clarity.
*
We get writer’s block when we don’t really know what we want to say.
And the reverse: when we know what we want to say, the writing flows.
Routine, willpower, determination–those may get your word count up, but without clarity, they won’t be words you want to keep.
Try this next time you feel stuck, staring at a blank page or a blinking cursor:
Check in with your intention.
What do I really want to say?
What do I actually mean?
Sometimes it helps to go a level deeper.
What am I not saying?
What am I afraid to say?
*
Clarity is the honey that attracts the Muse.
Or maybe:
Clarity is the Muse.
That that’s what inspiration is–a burst of clarity.
This is true in any form of writing, whether it’s a novel, a memoir, a LinkedIn post, or even an email.
So instead of focusing on sounding smart, or moving your commas around, or any other writing-related temptation…
Seek clarity instead.
Try this, and let me know how it goes.
