Moving day.
Everything’s moved in, so now it’s a matter of organizing.
This is my favorite part. Deciding what goes where, that glimmer of satisfaction when I put something its new home.
I don’t have much stuff (and thank God the apartment’s furnished). Each object I own tells a story of where or who it came from. It’s a pleasure to remember as it finds its home in my home.
So I’m taking my time.
📦
Moving in is a bit like writing a book.
Creating a space for a reader to step into. Creating a space *you* want to be.
The first step is the big stuff: carpets, cabinets, furniture.
Then big boxes: clothes, dishes, books.
Then the small stuff: pens, pictures, my little pink dolphin made from palm leaf (a keepsake from when I lived in the Amazon).
🏡
In writing, you have to establish the big stuff first – the central themes, structure, emotional touchpoints.
(I’ve had clients who want to line edit the first draft! Sure, you can do that, but it’s kiiiind of a waste of time.)
The details — word choices, punctuation, descriptions — come later.
They should all contribute to the central theme and emotional touchpoints.
First the couch, then the dolphin figurines.
🐬
The good news is, once the central stuff is in, the small stuff tends to find its place.
When you have a clear vision, and you go about realizing it in the right order…you might find writing a book is a pleasure. Moving, too.
