“…and that’s my memoir idea. I’m so excited,” my friend C. said. “But…how do I start?”
Ah, the age-old question.
How do you start writing?
My friends, here is the answer:
⚔️ First, you must register with the Secret Society of Real Writers.
🧬 This requires giving a DNA sample to see whether you have The Gene. (It used to be a blood test, now I think it’s saliva.)
📜 If you have The Gene, you must then fill out extensive paperwork and undergo interviews with established, traditionally published Authors.
If The Authors decide you are worthy, you will apply for the Notarized Stamp of Approval. Only after you receive that may you proceed to the following steps:
- Let your idea run free for a while. See where it goes and what other ideas show up.
- Notice when the urge to start writing arrives. When it does, pick up the nearest pen and start scribbling.
- Write an absolutely terrible first draft. Let it be so bad it’s embarrassing.
- Practice the craft of writing. Continue to improve it step by step.
- Join or form a community that supports and challenges you. Learn how to take feedback so it doesn’t cripple you.
- Work with a collaborator if it gets overwhelming or you need more guidance.
- Find what works for you and do it. Above all, keep writing and keep reading.
NOTE: It’s imperative that you do not do this UNTIL you have received The Stamp of Approval.
Otherwise, who knows what manner of chaos may ensue?
