Last week, my boyfriend came home from the market with what looked like a squash.
“Calabaza?” I said.
“Cacao,” he said.
He chopped it in half. Inside was what looked like giant, brown corn on the cob, covered in slimy white mesh. Into the air fryer it went, and what emerged an hour later was some of the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted. In fact, it’s completely ruined store-bought chocolate.
Did you know you could do that?
🌱
I knew chocolate comes from a plant. But having never seen it, that didn’t feel real.
Now, this squashy-looking plant feels more real than the chocolate bar in my fridge. The taste is more vibrant, more acute, more alive.
Isn’t it amazing to pull back the curtain on something we think of as ordinary?
What’s underneath, what’s behind, what’s inside?
🍫
This is why I love reading memoirs, and why I do the work I do. Getting inside people’s heads, hearing their thoughts, seeing what goes into the actions that may seem ordinary.
If you’re thinking about writing about your life, please do not doubt whether it deserves to be written.
It does.
