It’s been strange, boxing up my grandparents’ house this summer. Stuff they’d had for 50 years or more. Most of it was meaningful once, now it’s at Goodwill.
Honestly, it’s made me not want to own stuff.
My family is very into gift-giving at Christmas, so I’ve been thinking about how to handle that. What to do? I’ve always given a lot of handmade gifts, crocheted blankets, charcoal drawings, etc. But now I want to go even further into the nonmaterial. I want to give people gifts without giving them something else they have to own.
I’m thinking:
– donations to NGOs/causes they care about
– food I know they’ll eat
– experiences together /gift cards.
What about creative writing?
This one’s been fun to think about, despite the initial weirdness (“who would want THAT?”). Last week I started writing a screenplay as a gift for my aunt and uncle based on an inside joke we’ve had for years. It’s super motivating to think about the surprise on their faces when they realize what it is.
What about you? What does your family give each other that doesn’t become more stuff? (and I don’t mean White Elephant).

If you want to gift a loved one something you wrote, and you need help writing it, let’s talk. And/or, if you know someone wants to write a book but they need support/guidance/etc, that may be an option, too.)
