how do I know if my ideas are good enough?

How do you know if your ideas are “good enough”?

Long answer below.

TL;DR: you don’t.

✨

Sure, you can poll people. You can look at market trends and talk to industry experts. You can run your idea by beta readers or writing coaches. You can meditate on them, ask your higher power, sit with them and turn them over and reflect and listen to your gut.

But you still may not really know.

“Good enough” is a moving target. A subjective assessment that may depend on the day, your mood, on how hungry you are.

If you’re not sure internally, chances are that nothing external will reassure you.

And if you’re waiting to feel that your ideas are good enough before you start…well, you may stay in limbo indefinitely.

Every creative act is a leap of faith.

(That’s part of what it means to be creative at all. You can’t know the exact outcome.)

A lot of people wrestle with the question “Is this good enough?” — and it stops a lot of people from starting.

As I see it, the best way forward is this:

Let go of the need to know.

Pursue the ideas that excite you. Refine them, develop them. Build up a strong team of people you trust to help support your vision. Give it the absolute best shot you can.

Chances are, when you look back in 5 years, you won’t be mad that you did.

You might even find your idea is more than good enough: it’s better than you thought.

If you’re dreaming of holding your finished book in your hands, but you’re not sure how exactly to make that happen, you may want to work with a book coach or ghostwriter.
